Welcome
to RuthBatik.com
This website is about travel and adventure:
Travel on a grand scale, and quiet adventure.
If you're looking for fast action and high style,
you won't find it here. What you will find is
thoughtful, quirky reflections on the physical
grandeur of the United States and the generosity
of its people.
I took the roads less traveled, the back roads
that are mostly used by local folks. The U.S.
is a vast country; long distances and the fast
pace of modern life have made interstates the
default setting for most travelers in this country.
But interstates whiz by entire worlds, and American
culture is much broader and deeper than its
urban image suggests. The back roads are where
you find the "other" America that
is too often overlooked.
People
along the Way
I met hundreds of ordinary people going about
their everyday lives, and I want you to meet
them, too. I talked to anyone who would talk
to me: Men, women, and children, young and old.
They were working, playing, or exploring, yet
they all made me welcome in their worlds, if
only for a moment. This website and my book-in-progress
are about them.
I was one woman, driving and camping alone for
five months. Not only did I survive, but I thrived,
and found comfort and reassurance in my countrymen's
big hearts. The U.S. is far from perfect, but
it is nonetheless a very special place. I hope
that in my own small way I have accurately reflected
its beauty, complexity, and fundamental goodness.
